QE Engineer (Multi-domain)

Reports to: Senior Manager Quality Engineering

Job Overview
Join our cross-functional Quality Engineering group to lead and support verification efforts across the Hardware Adapter, Network and Platform teams in an agile, regulated environment. This role will require strong technical aptitude, a passion for teamwork, and a drive to design and implement end-to-end testing solutions that ensure high quality, resilience, and performance in systems supporting remote robotic-assisted surgery.
This is a hybrid role requiring in-person presence at our Goleta HQ several times per week.

The QE Engineer will rotate between the Hardware Adapter, Network and Platform teams based on business priorities. You will learn each team’s domain and adapt to each team’s needs, ensuring that quality objectives are met for the highest-priority initiatives.

You will work across:

  • Hardware Adapter Team – Custom-built computing systems running specialized software enabling high-definition, low-latency, real-time video streaming for surgery.

  • Network Team – High-availability, fiber-optic networks delivering high bandwidth, low latency, and high quality of service, including network hardware, monitoring, and alerting.

  • Platform Team – Cloud infrastructure, APIs, and services powering our Platform.

    Primary Responsibilities
Areas of specific responsibility include, but are not limited to, the following:

    • Verification Planning & Execution

      • Lead and support verification planning, including test plan and test case creation for software, hardware-software integrations, and network systems.

      • Design and execute end-to-end functional and non-functional verification (performance, security, resilience, failover, etc.).

      • Ensure traceability between requirements, architecture/design, test cases, and verification artifacts.

    • Test Automation & Tooling

      • Implement and maintain test automation frameworks for APIs, installed software, network performance testing, and video streaming validation.

      • Integrate tools for functional, performance, chaos, and security testing (such as: Postman, Pytest, Schemathesis, K6, OWASP ZAP, Chaos Toolkit, iPerf).

      • Develop automated test suites tailored to the current priority domain, such as:

        • Real-time video streaming validation for Hardware Adapter work.

        • Low-latency performance benchmarks and QoS validation for Network work.

        • API functionality, performance and reliability testing for Platform work.

    • Quality Process & Compliance

      • Collect and manage verification evidence in alignment with regulatory standards (ISO 13485, IEC 62304).

      • Contribute to Verification Summary Reports and support release readiness decisions.

      • Partner with Cybersecurity, Regulatory Quality, and Engineering teams to ensure compliance and mitigate risks.

    • Cross-Team Collaboration

      • Embed within the team currently prioritized by the business to identify quality improvements early in the SDLC.

      • Facilitate adoption of automated testing and quality practices within each team.

      • Team up with the Regulatory Quality and Security teams in order to help act as a regulatory and security liaison to ensure each team is informed and adhering to best practices.

    REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES

    • 7+ years as a Quality Engineer or Software Development Engineer in Test in PaaS, SaaS, SaMD, Medical Device, or high-performance networking/video streaming industries.

    • Knowledge of Verification and Validation (V&V) experience within regulated environments.

    • Knowledge of ISO 13485, IEC 62304, and related quality and safety standards. (preferred)

    • Hands-on experience with:

      • API testing for functionality, performance, and security.

      • Real-time video streaming performance validation (latency, jitter and frame rate). (preferred)

      • Network performance testing and monitoring (iPerf, SNMP, SLAs).

      • Hardware-software integration testing. (preferred)

    • Experience designing and maintaining automated test frameworks and pipelines.

    • Familiarity with microservices and distributed system testing strategies.

    • Avid user of AI-assisted tools to accelerate problem-solving, testing and documentation.

    Ideal Candidate Attributes

    • Thrives in defining and building quality engineering processes across multiple technical domains.

    • Flexible and adaptive, able to shift focus between teams based on changing business priorities.

    • Passionate about enabling teams to take ownership of quality from design through release.

    • Proactive in applying new tools, methods, and metrics to drive continuous improvement.

    • Highly collaborative with strong communication skills to align product, engineering, quality, and regulatory stakeholders.

About Sovato
Sovato is a team of healthcare leaders, innovators, and clinicians passionate about shaping the future of surgery. We are fueled by a profound mission to create unprecedented access to high- quality surgical care, delivering scarce surgical resources to new markets and new patients–– transcending the geographic boundaries that exist with surgery today.

Advancements in enabling technology, such as robotic surgical systems, virtual care, and the global telecommunication infrastructure, offer a unique moment in time to deliver remote robotic surgery. For patients, remote surgery creates ample access to the right surgeon, the right care and at an affordable price, driving consumer choice and decreasing the need for travel and delayed care. For healthcare systems and organizations, Sovato offers a novel solution to optimize clinical capacity, capture new surgical revenue, and create greater access to high-quality surgical care for all.

Remote surgery will forever change how surgery is received, delivered, and accessed. Our comprehensive solution brings together the people, systems, tools, and data in an integrated ecosystem––addressing the full scale of requirements to ensure a safe, scalable, and sustainable remote surgery program. The Sovato platform will manage every facet of the surgical journey from coordination, communication, connectivity, and system integrations when the patient is not in the same location as the surgeon––from the point of referral to surgery all the way through post-op care.

Sovato offers a competitive benefit package including medical, dental and vision coverage.
